Dolby Cinema is slowly turning into a proper premium format in India. Until recently, it felt like a one-off thing, a couple of locations here and there. Now, itβs starting to look like a proper rollout.
With Trichy getting a new Dolby Cinema screen, India now has multiple locations either running, under construction, or in renovation. And if things go as planned, the next few months will add even more.
Hereβs a clear look at where things stand.
Trichy Joins the Dolby Cinema List
LA Cinemas in Tiruchirappalli is the latest to enter the list. This will be Indiaβs fourth Dolby Cinema, and the setup looks solid on paper.
The screen is expected to be around 61 ft Γ 25.5 ft, with a scope aspect ratio (2.39:1). Projection will be handled by dual Christie E3LH projectors, which means full Dolby Vision capability. Audio, as expected, will be Dolby Atmos.
This isnβt the biggest Dolby Cinema screen in India, but thatβs not really the point. Dolby Cinema is more about consistency, controlled brightness, deep contrast, and properly tuned sound.
If calibration is done right, this should deliver a proper Dolby experience.
Existing Dolby Cinema Locations in India
Right now, India already has a few operational Dolby Cinema screens.
City Pride, Pune (Kharadi) was one of the early adopters. The screen here is around 55 ft Γ 26.2 ft, with a hybrid aspect ratio setup. It uses dual 4K RGB pure laser projectors and a custom Atmos speaker layout (around 61 speakers).
Then thereβs AMB Kapali in Bengaluru, which features a slightly larger 65 ft Γ 27.2 ft scope screen. This one runs on Dolby Vision 4K RGB pure laser projection with Dolby Atmos.
And in Hyderabad, Allu Cinemas Screen 1 has already become a reference point. With a 75 ft Γ 40.5 ft flat screen, dual Christie E3LH projectors, and a custom 72-speaker layout, itβs easily one of the most complete Dolby Cinema setups in the country right now.
Each of these screens has its own strengths, but the core experience remains consistent, better contrast, controlled brightness, and more precise sound compared to regular theatres.
Hyderabad Is Getting More Dolby Screens
Hyderabad is clearly becoming a key city for Dolby Cinema.
At Mythri Ranga (Jeedimetla), work is currently in progress. The theatre is being upgraded into a Dolby Cinema setup, with plans for Dolby Vision 4K RGB pure laser projection and Dolby Atmos. The aspect ratio is expected to be scope (2.39:1).
This one is still under renovation, but if done properly, it could become one of the stronger screens in that area.
Another project is happening at AMB Classic, RTC Cross Roads. This is a new Dolby Cinema screen under construction. Not many details are confirmed yet, but itβs expected to follow the same setup, Dolby Vision laser projection with Atmos sound.
Given the location, expectations will be high.
Expansion Beyond Hyderabad
Dolbyβs expansion isnβt limited to one city.
In Kochi, EVM Cinema is also being upgraded into a Dolby Cinema. Similar to others, this will feature a scope screen with Dolby Vision 4K RGB pure laser projection and Atmos sound.
Another location in Ulikkal (G Cineplex) is also under renovation, aiming to bring a Dolby Cinema setup there.
These arenβt major metro locations, which shows Dolby is not just focusing on Tier 1 cities anymore. The idea seems to be spreading the format wider.
Whatβs Common Across All These Screens
Even though sizes and layouts differ, most of these Dolby Cinema setups follow a pattern:
- Dolby Vision projection (dual or RGB laser)
- High contrast (around 1,000,000:1 levels)
- Dolby Atmos with multi-channel speaker layouts
- Carefully controlled auditorium lighting and design
This is what separates Dolby Cinema from regular βlaser + Atmosβ setups. Itβs not just about installing equipment, itβs about tuning everything together.
What Still Needs to Be Seen
On paper, all of this looks great. But execution matters more.
Weβve already seen in India that specs alone donβt guarantee a great experience. Calibration, maintenance, and day-to-day operation play a big role.
For example, even a high-end projector wonβt look good if brightness is not maintained properly. Same with Atmos, if tuning is off, the effect gets lost.
So while expansion is a good sign, consistency will be the real test.
Dolby Cinema is clearly moving beyond being a niche format in India. With Trichy joining the list and more locations coming up in Hyderabad, Kochi, and other areas, the network is slowly growing.
Right now:
- Hyderabad (Allu Cinemas) has one of the best setups
- Bengaluru and Pune offer solid Dolby experiences
- Trichy is the latest addition
- More screens are on the way
For movie lovers, this is a positive shift. More options, better technology, and hopefully more consistency across theatres.
If everything is maintained properly, Dolby Cinema could easily become the standard for premium movie watching in India not just a rare feature you have to travel for.
